Part 3 of Equality and Community: Reclaiming Human Destiny provides a contemporary understanding of “The Rise and Fall of Equality and How to Regain It.” Although the American economy has been strong over the last four decades, the sharing of these gains has been greatly unequal. Due to policies that favor corporations (tax cuts, deregulation, union busting, and stagnate wages) tens of trillions of dollars have been shifted from the bottom 50 percent of workers to the top 1 percent. If incomes were shared more equally as they were during the 1950s to the 1970s, the average middle-class family would earn the equivalent of at least $15,000 a year more than it does now. Much of the increase in inequality over the last four decades is the result of policies initiated by and for the benefit of the wealthy over the common good.
The final chapters of the book –as well as future webinars – deal with remedies proposed to address how to regain a more equal and equitable society. These issues and its specific proposals are presented dealing with, the corrupting influence of money in politics, policies for correcting tax imbalances, expanding healthcare, education and employment opportunities, funding infrastructure, and proposals for universal basic income (UBI).
Equality and Community counters the negative and injurious policies that limit and diminish our freedom, fulfillment, and the future viability of life on earth. My hope is the book will inspire and equip every-person to take a stand according to one’s free conscience, and ultimately to act and participate in effecting positive change.
After viewing slide show, return to read section below: Human Destiny
From the broad historical perspective set forth in this book, we realize we owe a debt to the legacy of those who have gone before us, known and unknown, over the centuries, millennia, and even including our evolutionary ancestors. To remember is to be inspired to build up and contribute to our community, nation, and beyond. What contributions are we making to the well-being and survival of humankind and our stressed and ailing planet? How will future generations evaluate our contributions in comparison to the efforts, achievements, and accomplishments of all who have gone before us? What legacy are we passing on to our children, grandchildren, and future generations? Given our forebears' experience of 300 millennia of trial and error and the present condition of our world, let us commit to reaching the necessary transformational changes in our lifetimes. Let us acknowledge our legacy of all those courageous persons who made a difference with their lives and represent the best of humankind. May we find courage to commit ourselves to a vision of a better world that is not only possible but also our destiny. Equality and Community: Reclaiming Human Destiny is offered to guide our course forward.
